During the golden age of the whaling industry in the mid-19th century Sag Harbor had more than 50 whaling vessels in its fleet and rivaled New Bedford as a major whaling port. The harbor bustled with maritime activity and the streets teemed with exotic sailors from foreign lands. It was a brief but extremely prosperous time for the village where the handsome homes of Captain’s Row, the unique Whalers Church and many other landmarks are testimony to Sag Harbor’s prominence.
