Description

Artists, art historians and art lovers can equally appreciate a beautiful oil painting, yet with different perspectives. Now, try to look at a painting through the eyes of an Art Detective. Did you ever think about the kind of paint brushes used by the artist or why some paintings have a crackled surface? Did you ever wonder about the mechanics of stretching a canvas? Did you know that the mark and even the wooden stretcher can often date a painting and determine its origins? What art materials were available to the artist when this piece was made? Why are some paintings signed and others not? Once you try to uncover the mysteries of how a painting was created, identifying its authenticity and its place in the art world becomes an art in itself.

A professional Art Conservator explores many of these questions when examining a painting that requires conservation.  On October 10, at 7:00pm the Art League of Long Island is proud to present a lecture by Alex Katlan, a renowned Art Conservator who has analyzed, restored and preserved oil paintings making them readable and viewable while still reflecting their age and history. For nearly forty years, his New York conservation laboratory is fully-equipped to preserve the historical context of European and American paintings using scientific techniques such as microscopic fiber and pigment analysis and Infrared reflectography.

Katlan will share his vast knowledge of the business of Art Conservation, filled with interesting anecdotes on his experiences throughout his career. He will address issues that will interest both artists and art collectors.

From a practical point of view, the artist should know how to properly maintain his masterpieces. In this talk, Katlan will describe the best way to care for a painting and what to do if it needs repair if damaged. Using the correct materials and tools is essential when dealing with fine art.

Learn how he examines evidence that he discovers while restoring a painting that can perhaps identify its artist or even uncover a forgery. His expert insight on the history of art materials also plays an important role in art conservation. For example, artists used to make their own paint using glass, sand, powders and other materials. It wasn’t until 1842, that the invention of paint tubes by Winsor-Newton allowed artists to be more mobile, thus starting the Plein-Air painting craze that is so popular today?

This lecture is the perfect opportunity for artists and art lovers to meet a distinguished professional in the art world and understand all the layers of art conservation.
