To celebrate the birthday anniversary of William Cullen Bryant, the Friends of Cedarmere cordially invite the public to a free Poetry Reading, the second in their inaugural monthly series “Poetry at Cedarmere.” Following upon the success of their October reading, which featured four outstanding Long Island poets, the Bryant celebration on Sunday, November 2, welcomes a stellar quartet, hosted by poet Liz Axelrod, including: Star Black, photographer, poet, artist and professor in the MFA program at Stony Brook, Southampton; David Lehman, world-renowned poet and editor of The Best American Poetry, and professor at The New School in New York City; Laura Cronk, award-winning poet and poetry editor for The Inquisitive Eater: New School Food; and Stefanie Lipsey, poet, librarian, and founder of Writing Yoga workshops and blog.
William Cullen Bryant is the undisputed ‘father of American poetry.’ His 19th century home and gardens, known as Cedarmere, were made gifts to the people of Nassau County, for historical, cultural and educational purposes. The Friends of Cedarmere work to ensure that this covenant is honored—especially given Bryant’s important legacies in literature, journalism and civic leadership. The recent tenancy of Cedarmere by the Hagedorn Foundation has resulted in major renovations, as well as in partnering with the Friends to develop this exciting new series of poetry events. Audience members have been moved by the “profound impression” this matchless space makes in providing a home for the living traditions of poetry, music and dance.
The November 2nd Poetry Reading is from 2 until 5pm, with a reception to follow. Donations are gratefully accepted. Cedarmere is located at 225 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor, NY.
