Description

On Saturday, April 26, the Music Program at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sea Cliff, NY will host a special springtime event titled C’mUnityBloom:  Music for Renewal.  Featured are two works very rarely heard in live performances: JS Bach’s Goldberg Variations (1741) and Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians (1976).  St. Luke’s Director of Music and the Arts, Paul Baserman, pianist, and the QC Un-semble, under the direction of Queens College Professor of Music, Michael Lipsey, will present these masterworks, accompanied by The North Shore Yoga All-Stars.  The program will be an in-depth exploration of the connections between musical processes and meditative practices.  Bach’s 30 Variations range in mood from serene to boisterous; by turns intimate and extrovert, they encompass an amazing spectrum of emotion and technique.  The physical demands on the performer may be likened to Yoga, particularly for the sustained concentration required.  In a similar way, the astonishing tapestry of sound in the Music of Reich, presented in the round by a core of multiple marimbas, pianos, voices, as well as other instruments, is a true feat of coordination, creating a sustained harmony unlike any other.  The sublime element of Bach meets a blissful state in Reich; and by welcoming the Yoga community to share the performance, the organizers hope audience members, by extension, will find their own approach to an enjoyably mindful and restoring experience.   Guests should feel free to bring a floor mat, a comfy seat or pillows, though pews and folding chairs will be provided.  Tickets are $15, payable at any of three designated entrances, and include a ‘spa-cuisine’ reception afterwards in the Church Garden.  Proceeds to benefit the St. Luke’s Music Program and the Queens College, Aaron Copland School of Music, Student Ensembles.  The Program begins promptly at 5, in the Church with Bach, and travels on at 5:45, without pause, to the Parish Hall for Reich.  The venues are interior-connected, with universal access via the Church front entrance ramp, and located at 253 Glen Avenue, in the heart of Sea Cliff.
