The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County presents a screening of the PBS documentary "Conspiracy of Kindness," about Chiune Sugihara. As Japan's consul to Lithuania during WWII, Sugihara risked career, disgrace, his life and the lives of his family defying Tokyo by writing transit visas for refugees desperate to escape persecution. More than 2,000 Sugihara-stamped passports allowed hundreds of families to flee Europe through Russia to safe havens. Today it is estimated that more than 40,000 people owe their very existance to Sugihara's heroic acts of humanitarianism.
A discussion facilitated by Beth Levinthal, Executive Director of the Hofstra Museum, will follow the screening of the film. Light refreshments will be served.
The David Taub Film Series was established in honor of David Taub (1932-2010), Holocaust Survivor and respected friend of the Center.
