"Special Statement" ...Strong thunderstorms will impact Suffolk and eastern Nassau counties... At 916 PM EDT...National Weather Service Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 9 miles south of Branford to Center Moriches to Shinnecock Hills to East Hampton...and moving west at 50 mph. People in Suffolk and eastern Nassau counties...including Westhampton...Bridgehampton...East Hampton...Shinnecock Hills...Mastic Beach...Manorville...Davis Park...Center Moriches...Sag Harbor and Riverhead...should monitor the weather situation closely. Listen for possible warnings and be prepared to take appropriate action should severe weather threaten. Gusty winds up to 50 mph are expected with these storms. In addition...very heavy rain...with rainfall rates of up to one to one and one half inches an hour...is occurring with these storms. This could cause ponding of water on roadways... and minor flooding of poor drainage areas. Lightning is one of natures number one killers. Remember...if you can hear thunder...you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter immediately. Looking for a new car? The Nassau County District Attorney's office announced that 23 vehicles seized by local law enforcement agencies from defendants convicted of various offenses are currently being auctioned off.  The group includes a BMW and SUVs, and bids have already been placed.  Proceeds from the auction will be distributed to state and county agencies to fund victim restitution and local crime-fighting programs.
