Phillip Lopate has written four personal essay collections — Bachelorhood, Against Joie de Vivre, Portrait of My Body and Portrait Inside My Head; two novels, Confessions of Summer and The Rug Merchant; two poetry collections, The Eyes Don’t Always Want to Stay Open and The Daily Round; a memoir of his teaching experiences, Being With Children; a collection of his movie criticism, Totally Tenderly Tragically; an urbanist meditation, Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan; and a biographical monograph, Rudy Burckhardt: Photographer and Filmmaker. His most recent books are Two Marriages, Notes on Sontag, At the End of the Day: Selected Poems, and To Show and To Tell: The Craft of Literary Nonfiction.
