Description

Nationally-renowned activist Jamia Wilson has been invited to SUNY Old Westbury to host a presentation on “Media, Sex, and Power: Next Generation Feminism and Cultural Change” on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Wilson, the Executive Director of Women, Action & the Media, has been a powerful force in the social justice movement for nearly a decade, strengthening the health of youth and young adults, working on advancements through technology, and advocating for gender justice in media.

In collaboration with Student Government Association and Academic Affairs, the Women’s Center at Old Westbury’s student-staff and Dr. Carol Quirke, director, will moderate the discussion. Similar to Wilson’s professional pursuits of enlightening students nationwide about race, feminism, spirituality and leadership, the Women’s Center’s goals align to champion advocacy and to promote community on-campus and beyond.

In addition to being a TED Prize Storyteller - an award given to an individual with a creative, bold vision to spark global change - Wilson has been featured in New York Magazine, The Today Show, and the Washington Post. She was highlighted by Refinery 29 as a “Face of the Future for Feminism,” and is currently working on her book “Beyoncé and Feminism.”
