PAINTING CHARACTER STUDIES WITH DOUG DAWSON
September 25, 2015 - 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Character studies are head and shoulder studies of people in which there is no concern for capturing likeness. The goal is to create a painting of people that others will enjoy looking at even though they don’t know the person. The emphasis is usually on either mood, or quality of light, color, and design.
Topics we will cover include: starting a painting with a simple palette; creating a mood by underpainting,; helpful hints about how to paint the features of the face; and light and shadow on the face. The workshop will start off with a demonstration in which all of these things will be considered and demonstrated. Then students will have time to work on their own paintings.
