Kids for Kids Productions present “The Miracle Worker.”

Oakdale, NY.  (April 18, 2014)  -  "She wants to talk like...BE like you and me. Every day she slips further and further away. I don't know how to call her back." - William Gibson

Kids for Kids Productions is proud to present William Gibson’s classic play, “The Miracle Worker.”  Performances will take place on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 at 7:00pm and Sunday, May 18 at 2:00pm at Centennial Hall on the St. John's University campus in Oakdale.  All tickets are $15 and may be purchased in advance by contacting the Kids for Kids office at (631) 218-7810.  Tickets will also be available at the Box Office one-hour prior to each performance.  More information can be found at www.kidsforkidsproductions.org

Based on Helen Keller's autobiography, "The Story of My Life," and set in Alabama in the late 1800’s, this play recounts the early relationship between young Helen and her teacher, Annie Sullivan. Blind, deaf and mute, Helen’s inability to communicate has left her frustrated and violent. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute in Boston, which sends them Annie, a "half-blind Yankee schoolgirl” for a tutor. But Annie, through persistence, love and sheer stubbornness, breaks through Helen's walls of silence and darkness.

Directed by Phyllis Kaye and performed by an incredibly talented group of twenty-one local young actors, ages seven to eighteen, this play is appropriate for the entire family.  Sincere and touching, there are also plenty of laugh-filled moments as Helen struggles each day to surmount her obstacles.  An out-an-out fight over the breakfast table will leave audience members laughing and cheering and the triumphant end will bring tears.

Eleven-year-old Stony Brook resident, Melanie Jolley convincingly takes on the role of Helen with gumption and Emma Hooks, a sixteen-year-old from Bayport, understands Annie's own difficult childhood and finds humor in her current situation.  The gifted actresses make a fine pair as they battle out the tale of triumph over adversity with wit and determination.

Kids for Kids Productions, a not-for-profit organization, is located at St. John's University, 500 Montauk Highway in Oakdale, NY.  (To reach Centennial Hall, enter through Gate 1 and proceed to the end on the right.)

"The Miracle Worker" was William Gibson's most acclaimed work.  The play earned three Tony awards on Broadway and the original 1962 film version garnered Oscars for its stars, Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke.

Don't miss this compelling tale of love, light and letting go.
