Daryl Davis, the focus of the award-winning documentary Accidental Courtesy (now available on Netflix), will speak about the intersection of freedom of speech and race relations.
Mr. Davis aims to illuminate the importance of conversing with those who have adversarial or opposing viewpoints. He has much authority in this area: throughout his life Mr. Davis has sat down, as a black man, to converse with members of the Ku Klux Klan. Today, he possesses numerous Klan robes, given to him by some among the hundreds of KKK members who renounced the organization as a result of his efforts. Mr. Davis’ lecture and discussion thus promise to show the vital power of freedom of speech even in the most extreme of cases such as those surrounding race. His lecture will begin at 7:30pm on April 20th in LIU Post’s Hillwood Lecture Hall.
Mr. Davis has received local and national awards for his work in race relations, and is a sought-after consultant for CNN, MSNBC and other media outlets on race relations. In addition to being the subject of the award-winning documentary, Accidental Courtesy (2016), Mr. Davis has detailed his experience in his book, Klan-Destine Relationships (New Horizon Press, 2011).
This event is sponsored by LIU Post's Institute for the Study of Democracy and Liberalism and the Department of Philosophy.
