Description

On Saturday September 29, 2012, The Long Island Museum will open its doors free of charge along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which the Long Island Museum will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide.

Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media’s mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. For one day only, the Long Island will grant free access to visitors who download a Museum Day Live! ticket at Smithsonian.com. Last year’s event drew over 350,000 museum-goers nation-wide, and this year’s Museum Day Live! is expected to attract close to 400,000 participants.

“The affiliation between the Long Island Museum and the Smithsonian Institution is a wonderful opportunity for intellectual exchange,” said Jackie Day, Museum President and CEO.  “We are always looking for ways this partnership can benefit the museum and its constituents, and Museum Day Live! offers an opportunity for us to reach new audiences.”

Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The exhibitions featured in this year's Museum Day Live! event include Long Island, America’s 1950s Frontier featuring iconic 1950s photographs, artifacts and fashions, and William Sidney Mount: Country Scenes for City Patrons, featuring some of Mount’s most well-known genre paintings, typifying the work for which he became famous. For more information about the Long Island Museum, visit longislandmuseum.org or call 631-751-0066.

The Museum Day Live! ticket will be available to download at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per e-mail address.
