Description

Program Leader: Xylia Serafy, South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Nature Educator

Whether you want to spruce up your garden or create a sustainable backyard habitat, native plants have a lot to offer. Over the last century, new houses, factories and shopping centers have covered land that was once ecologically productive habitat for many organisms. With this urbanization also came lawns full of exotic ornamental plants──proving problematic for our native pollinators. Although aesthetically pleasing, these alien species are known to sever food webs, become invasive pests, out-compete native species, and degrade the habitat of the remaining natural areas. Join Xylia for a discussion on the importance of switching to native plants on your property, and learn just how easy it is to turn your backyard into a biodiverse sanctuary! Afterward, she will lead you on a walk through Vineyard Field, identifying both the native and invasive plants in this “old-field” habitat, and the efforts being made to keep this ecosystem healthy.
