Helping our own here at home . . . The Women Veterans Program, based in Northport, Long Island, serves the unmet needs of our brave female soldiers. This program provides them with items that are not supplied by the VA hospital. The government provides these women with standard male issued supplies, including men’s underwear. The Women Veterans staff works with the women soldiers, helping them adjust to their stay in the hospital and supplies them with basic female needs (such as women’s underwear, personal care items, even basic sundries like soap, washcloths, tea/coffee and bathrobes). The hospital’s portion of the program offers medical and/or psychological assistance for approximately 120 veterans a year. This organization also helps the women whose spouses have been deployed and helps address their children’s needs with items such as diapers and formula.
