Creative writing offers some truth more durable than facts, but the nature of that truth is tangled up with our expectations. Change one word on the cover of a book—from “novel” to “memoir”—and you’ve rewritten every sentence. For centuries, writers have fought back with pseudonyms, epistolary novels, literary hoaxes, gonzo journalism, alter-egos, and any other technique they can imagine to upend reader expectations and muddle the idea of what’s true. Understanding this contested terrain is crucial to reading and writing in our age of competing realities. We’ll study the ways fiction uses and abuses the ideas of truth and authorship, experiment with these techniques, and discuss the creative and social benefits as well as the pitfalls.
