"Flash Flood Watch" ...Flash Flood Watch remains in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon... The Flash Flood Watch continues for * portions of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York, including the following areas, in southern Connecticut, Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven, and New London. In northeast New Jersey, Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union. In southeast New York, Bronx, Kings (brooklyn), Nassau, New York (manhattan), Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond (staten island), Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. * From Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon * low pressure approaches the tri-state area tonight and passes through on Thursday. Rain tonight becomes potentially heavy at times Thursday morning with the potential of heavy downpours into early afternoon. A total of 1.25 to 2.25 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts possible in any stronger convection on Thursday. Flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, as well as small streams will therefore be possible Thursday. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued. Maloit , "Wind Advisory" ...Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 am to 6 PM EST Thursday... * winds...southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. * Timing...mid Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon. * Impacts...strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph, or gusts of 46 to 57 mph, are expected or occurring. Description

The 39th Annual Shelter Island 10K/5K Run/Walk, a USA track and field certified course, will be held on Saturday, June 16th, 2018 at 5:30 p.m.  Touted as the most scenic course by Runner’s World Magazine, the Shelter Island Run is a fundraising event for East End Charities. This year’s race will welcome former Olympian, four time NYC Marathon winner and four time Boston Marathon winner, Bill Rodgers.

 

Celebrate Post Race at the Runner’s Festival on Race Grounds at the American Legion

Following the race this year, will be a Family Fun Post Race, a great way to celebrate completing the race. The Family Fun Post Race Party will take place at the American Legion adjacent to the race finish. There will be dancing with DJ Twilo, local artisan food trucks, a BBQ, cash bar, local merchant shopping area, a photo booth, kids fun area, amazing raffle prizes and more. Race for Good - Supporting Local Charities

Proceeds from the race will go to support several East End charities. The Shelter Island 10K Community Fund, which assists our community with philanthropic donations to community programs for Shelter Island, educational services including scholarships, project Excel, school trips and family services.  East End Hospice, which offers home health care, with short-term hospital stay when needed, for the people of the Hamptons and surrounding Long Island towns. Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, which provides a safe haven for boys ages 10-21 who are in need of a therapeutic environment. Charity teams are encouraged and there will be a discount offered for teams of ten or more.

 

Registration Information

Runners may register online or by mail.  Sign up is available online at http://bit.ly/2Gva66L.  Register by mail by printing the application at https://www.shelterislandrun.com/register.html and mail with check payable to S.I. Run Inc., PO Box 266, Shelter Island, NY 11964.  Fees are as follows: 10K - $40, $50 Day of Race; 5K - $30, $40 Day of Race, $15 Kids for kids 14-and-under, and veterans are free. Participants with joggers are welcomed at the back of the race. Awards will be given for winners in the 10K, 5K run and 5K walk categories, with a $10,000 Runner's Purse and course bonuses for the 10k.
