Description

Nathan Sanford of Bridgehampton, a distant relative of his biographer Ann Sandford, was educated at the Clinton Academy in East Hampton before going on to study at Yale and the Litchfield School of Law. He rose to prominence in the post-Revolutionary era as the federal attorney appointed by President Jefferson to serve all of New York State. From there he went on to serve in the U.S. Senate from 1815-21, and in 1824 he ran for vice president on the ticket with Henry Clay. Highly ambitious, he navigated a career during which he made significant contributions to reformist causes but was also adept at political compromise. In her talk, Ms. Sandford, author of “Reluctant Reformer,” will share some of her insights into the life, times and career of her fascinating relative, Nathan Sanford. Co-sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library.
