In this simplified approach to understanding glazes and exploring glaze surfaces learn the function of raw materials, understand glaze recipes and make simple glazes. Explore various materials and techniques for achieving unique glaze surfaces using glazes, clay slips, oxides, stains, underglazes and natural materials. Day one covers raw materials tests and creating glaze recipes. Day two focuses on making glazes and exploring glaze surfaces. Focus will be Cone 6 electric glazes.
Students should bring a notebook and index cards, 10-20 small bisque pinch cups, 5-10 small bisque test pots in your favorite clay, and 5-10 small leather hard test pots. Materials included.
Nancy Robbins has a BFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. She also studied ceramic engineering and glaze chemistry at Alfred University. She was senior craftsmen for ceramic reproductions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nancy is also one of the founders of the Clay Art Guild of the Hamptons and teaches at the new Clay Art Studios in Water Mill, NY.
