John Strong, who was a professor of History and American Studies for many years at Long Island
University, will give a power point presentation related to his latest book, “America’s First Whalemen: The Indian Shore Whalers on Long Island, 1650-1750,” just published by Arizona Press. He will trace the development of “ye whale design” on the southern shores of Long Island in that period when the Shinnecocks, Unkechaugs and Montauketts were successfully hunting whales. Many founding families formed companies and employed Indians to hunt the North Atlantic Right Whale, a capital enterprise that launched Long island into the emerging global economy.
