By developing a generous heart in meditation we will naturally come to regard everyone’s happiness as important and increase our wish and ability to help them. When we cherish others as supreme, we become “a friend of the world.” This protects our mind from negativity and draws others closer to us. To do this, we need to start with a very basic exercise – one of the main practices in the Kadam ‘Lojong’ tradition of training the mind – called Equalizing Self and Others. In this Tuesday night series in July, we will explore this fundamental meditation which is a first step in leading us toward the wisdom and compassion of full enlightenment. When we learn to change the object of our cherishing from ‘self’ to ‘other’ it makes all the difference in the world.
