Description

Stony Brook University and Secure Decisions, a division of Applied Visions, Inc., are offering a free workshop on cybersecurity at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in New Cassel. The workshop is open to all students in grades 7 and 8 and will be held after-school from October 16-27.

This workshop, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, is designed to introduce young people to the lucrative and fast-growing field of cybersecurity. Recent 2017 statistics show over 19,000 cybersecurity job openings in the NY
metro area. Students will learn about cybersecurity and different career paths by reading and writing comic-book stories using Comic-BEE. This novel application was developed by Secure Decisions for the Department of Homeland Security with the purpose of educating citizens about cybersecurity. This workshop is part of a research study to determine the effectiveness of this approach to learning.

Workshop sessions meet Monday through Friday from 3:30-5:00 pm. After the final session, students will present their comic creations to friends and family at a Showcase Event, October 27th at 5:30 pm. An Information Session for parents, guardians, and their children will be held at the Center on October 3rd at 6:30 pm.

Space is limited to the first 20 students who sign up. Permission forms will be handed out at the Information Session. They may also be found on the web at http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Projects/bigsce/ParentalPermissionForm.pdf. Signed forms may be dropped off at the Center but must be received by October 6th. Participants will be notified of acceptance into the program by October 10th. For more information about the program, please contact Dr. Lori Scarlatos at Stony Brook University by email (Lori.Scarlatos@stonybrook.edu) or by phone (631-632-8761).
