A historic plaque commemorating the loss of 115 passengers and crew members when the ship Mexico wrecked on January 2, 1837 will be unveiled by the Long Beach Island Landmarks Association. The victims, most of them Irish immigrants, froze to death on the deck of the ship, just two hundred yards off of Long Beach within sight of the land of their dreams. For the past 20 years, the Historical Society of East Rockaway & Lynbrook and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) of Nassau County have sponsored an annual ceremony at the victims' gravesite in Lynbrook. This year the Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host this event unveiling a plaque on the boardwalk at Lincoln Blvd.at 11 am just yards where this tragic event occurred 181 years ago!
