Description

"As artists have always known, art holds the promise of advancing reflection and healing, aiding communities in initiating public dialogue, and moving activism forward. It can bring people from disparate environments and points of view together, spark discussion, and advance change. It can also provide a meaningful experience of expression for youth and adults.

With this in mind, Landmark on Main Street and Expressive Elocution are facilitating a public art piece that elevates our community's message of support for the Black Lives Matter movement and responds to the national conversation about systemic racism in our institutions.

The project seeks Port Washington residents of all ages to create a large scale display that reflects participants' artistic talents, voice and reflections as they (and we all) navigate this singular moment. The intent is to make a collective artistic statement by and for the community.

Art educator and Port Washington resident Safia Fatimi, one of the project's coordinators shares, "I am excited to see how this public art piece can activate discussions, bring people together from various ages and backgrounds, and create an understanding of diverse viewpoints with an end goal of further connecting our amazing community of Port Washington."

Four large panels stating "KNOW JUSTICE, KNOW PEACE" will be available for community members to add their words, images, and inspiration. This artwork will evolve during the course of the day. The finished piece will hang on the Landmark fence facing Main Street along with two more panels being completed by the youth at Littig House Community Center under the direction of Port Washington community member, Ms. Thompson.

Expressive Elocution Program Director Elise May, states, "All art making gives the opportunity for expression that helps both the artist and the audience to engage, process, experience empathy, question, challenge and activate. Inclusively bringing this project to the community offers all the ability to use the arts as a vehicle for discussion, action, equity and social change." Ms. May is on the Board of Stage the Change, Inc., the Arts as a Social Voice.
