We can’t ignore the fact that Long Island is an island and is forever being influenced by the waters surrounding us. Tara Rider, a lecturer at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University and a New York Humanities Council Public Scholar, will explore the ways in which the waters have helped to create our culture as well as the land we live on. From oysters to shipwrecks and pirates, the marine environment has shaped the lives of Long Islanders.
