Description

Since his stunning appearance on the London art scene in the early 1960’s, David Hockney has proven to be one of the most talented, innovative, versatile and prolific artists of his day. In addition to his brightly colored acrylic canvases depicting sunny scenes of Los Angeles, Hollywood and Malibu, Hockney has explored nearly every medium of artistic expression, including printmaking, stage design, drawing, polaroid and digital photography, photocollage, photomurals, and even Quantel Paintbox on iPad and Agisoft PhotoScan on computer. He turned his controversial researches into the use of camera lucida by artists such as Vermeer and Caravaggio into a book, Secret Knowledge, and he himself used such a device to make over 200 drawings. He issued his monumental A History of Pictures as a large coffee-table book and as a children’s book. After returning to his native Yorkshire, he worked extensively outdoors and combined 50 canvases to compose the largest painting exhibited in the Royal Academy in London.

Author, painter, photographer and filmmaker Peter Josyph will explore key aspects of Hockney’s rich and varied artistic life, featuring selections from the films David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, and David Hockney: Joiner Photographs.
