Description

While technology has made computer-aided design and photographic replication easily accessible, Drawing Matters, a new exhibit presented by the Hofstra University Museum of Art, celebrates the skill and intimacy of drawing by hand. The exhibit includes works from the Museum’s permanent collection, such as botanical and scientific illustrations, and engineering and architectural drawings. The Museum’s drawings range from the 18th- 21st centuries and encompass a wide variety of styles, from representational to abstract. The scientific illustrations include taxonomic descriptions of species and how they are used in research and publication. Engineering and architectural sketches are accompanied by detailed plans, models, and/or photographs of completed projects.

Benny Andrews, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Nancy Grossman, Diego Rivera, and George Romney are among the featured artists in Drawing Matters. Biological drawings by Hofstra Professor Jason D. Williams and renderings by Fiedler Marciano Architecture are also included.

“Drawing is a form of communication, and it remains fundamental to understanding, translating, analyzing, and communicating the world around us,” said Karen T. Albert, director of the Hofstra University Museum of Art and curator of the exhibit.  “Images such as those featured in Drawing Matters transcend language barriers and enhance global communication.”

Drawing Matters will be on display from January 25-June 17, 2022, at the Emily Lowe Gallery located behind Emily Lowe Hall on Hofstra University’s South Campus. The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, January 27, 2022, 4:30-6:30 p.m., featuring special remarks by Ms. Albert. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free and open to the public. RSVP is required. Call the Museum at 516-463-5672 to register or for more information.

When visiting the Museum’s indoor galleries, masks/face coverings are required, as is proof of vaccination and photo ID. RSVPs are required for all on-campus events. These requirements are subject to change as public health conditions evolve. Visit hofstra.edu/togetheragain for more information.
