Description

Where do many students who struggle fall within today's rigorous and fast paced curriculum? Many of them fall behind! Teaching the "how to learn" skills as positive learning habits allow students to consider the cognitive skills of perception, self-talk and visualization as strategies to overcome challenges. They begin to work with a calm mind allowing then to acquire, access and apply information taught with confidence. Students' learn to identify that they can manage their own perceptions, improve their academic, behavioral and social-emotional skills by pairing both perception and visualization with positive self-talk. These skills are taught and supported by educators' ability to model and teach these skills as well as the effective use of para-verbal communication and active listening. These skills can become life-long strategies that can be applied in college and throughout adulthood. During this interactive and collaborative presentation, participants will learn:

• To understand and demonstrate how perception relates to learning
• How to manage different perceptions in students
• How to apply a positive perception to difficult assignments/situations
• To develop nonverbal and verbal working memory skills
• How visualization improves learning
• Demonstrate their understanding of visualization
• To develop visualization in students
• The benefits of self-talk
• To model and teach positive self-talk as the common thread to learning and preserving through challenges
• To understand and demonstrate the use of para-verbal communication and active listening as it pertains to the classroom setting
