For centuries the ancestors of the Aztecs roamed the Americas in search of their prophesied homeland. Their principal god, Huitzilopochtli, had instructed them to search the Americas until they sighted an eagle perched on a Nopal cactus with a rattle snake in its beak. This would be the heart from which a great Aztec Empire would emerge. In 1325 the sign was sighted and the giant pyramid and temple complex of Tenochitlan was constructed in what is today Mexico City. Until today the cactus, eagle, and rattle snake symbol grace the Mexican flag and the nations venerates the city as a sacred city.
