Description

Join a conversation between art historian Alexander Nemerov, who is working on a new book about Frankenthaler, and Clifford Ross, Chairman of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.

Nemerov is the Carl and Marilyn Thoma Provostial Professor in the Arts and Humanities as well as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. A scholar of American art, Alexander Nemerov writes about the presence of art, the recollection of the past, and the importance of the humanities in our lives today. Committed to teaching the history of art more broadly as well as topics in American visual culture—the history of American photography, for example—he is a noted writer and speaker on the arts. His most recent books are Silent Dialogues: Diane Arbus and Howard Nemerov (2015), Wartime Kiss: Visions of the Moment in the 1940s (2013) and Acting in the Night: Macbeth and the Places of the Civil War (2010).

A nephew of Helen Frankenthaler, Ross is a multi-media artist whose work has been exhibited widely in galleries, museums, and public spaces in the United States and abroad, and is in public collections including the J. Paul Getty Museum; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
