We often talk about the “legacy of the Civil War” or the “legacy of slavery” when discussing the roots of current racial problems and conflicts. However, in the 150th year of the passage of the third Reconstruction Act, it is probably more useful to talk about the “legacy of Reconstruction”, or legacy of its failure. Reconstruction (1867-1877) was an unprecedented federal government program to guarantee political rights, including voting, to the recently-freed African Americans. In spite of bold promises, Reconstruction faced formidable obstacles to succes. Dr Bill Miller will discuss these issues at the FREE program.
