Description

Today, Southampton lies on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road Company, but that wasn’t always the case. In 1869, the earliest days of rail travel on Long Island, visitors traveled from New York to Southampton on the Main Line to the Manorville Branch, where their train would turn south and travel through the Pine Barrens to Eastport and then follow the spine of the South Fork to Southampton Village. It would be twenty years later, 1889, before the Long Island Rail Road would establish the Montauk Branch as we know it to serve Southampton and Sag Harbor from Babylon, Patchogue and Speonk. What we know as the “Cannonball” began as an express train from New York City in 1883. Join us for a fascinating talk about the history of the L.I.R.R. in Southampton, presented by Don Fisher, President of the Railroad Museum of Long Island.
