Description

Despite class differences, women of the Gilded Age shared at least one similarity — they were viewed as inferior to men. Male doctors spent an inordinate amount of time theorizing how a woman’s body controlled her mind. The “obstruction of a woman’s menstrual flow” could lead to “hysteria.” She could even suffer from a “wandering womb” if there wasn’t a baby in her uterus to prevent it from roaming around the body. Join Velya Jancz-Urban to hear more about these widely-held yet fantastically incorrect suppositions and superstitions about the female mind and body. Co-sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library.
