Description

Montauk Observatory is honored to present this talk about one of the strangest scientific detective stories of the last 50 years, an exciting quest for a new form of matter. When leading Princeton physicist Paul Steinhardt began working in the 1980s, scientists thought they knew all the conceivable forms of matter. “The Second Kind of Impossible” is the story of Steinhardt's 35 year-long quest to challenge conventional wisdom. It begins with a curious geometric pattern that inspires two theoretical physicists to propose a radically new type of matter—one that raises the possibility of new materials with never before seen properties, but that violates laws set in stone for centuries. Steinhardt dubs this new form of matter “quasicrystal.” The rest of the scientific community calls it simply impossible.

The talk will describe the scientific odyssey that unfolds over the ensuing decades, first to prove the validity of the idea, then to pursue Steinhardt's wildest conjecture: that nature made quasicrystals long before humans discovered them. Along the way, Steinhardt's team encounters clandestine collectors, corrupt scientists, secret diaries, international smugglers, and KGB agents.

Prof. Steinhardt's latest book, The Second Kind of Impossible, will be available for purchase & signing.

Paul J. Steinhardt is the Albert Einstein Professor in Science at Princeton University, where he is on the faculty of both the departments of Physics and Astrophysical Sciences. In 2014, the International Mineralogical Association named a new mineral “steinhardite” in his honor.

Montauk Observatory thanks Prof Steinhardt for sharing his expertise, East Hampton Library for kindly co-sponsoring this event, and Sheryl Gold and David Larkin for their generous support!

Montauk Observatory (or MO, soon to be called Hamptons Observatory), is a 501(c)(3) NYS nonprofit that has served the South Fork since 2005, and relies on public support to operate. Its mission  is to foster interest in science, particularly astronomy, through quality educational programs. Lectures, star parties, portable planetarium shows, and other events are held throughout the Hamptons. MO established the first astronomical observatory on the South Fork (in East Hampton), complete with Long Island's largest research-grade telescope; these facilities will soon be made accessible over the internet to students, teachers, researchers and the general public. All programs are free-of-charge to ensure that they are as accessible as possible. For further info about Montauk Observatory, to receive event notices, or to make a tax-deductible donation, please visit www.MontaukObservatory.com or email MontaukObservatory@gmail.com
