Venture Smith’s is a compelling story that traces the path of a once-enslaved African Prince to a rich life as a free man in America. Chandler B. Saint and researchers for the Documenting Venture Smith Project have spent years researching the life that Smith himself wrote about in his own narrative, adding context, insights and illustrations in their book titled “Venture Smith.” Written by Saint with Robert Pierce Forbes, the book not only adds many fascinating details omitted by Smith in his own remarkable autobiography, but also establishes Smith’s original work as one of the masterpieces of American autobiography and the earliest-known entirely African American work of literature. Join us for a talk and book-signing by Chandler Saint and learn more about Venture Smith’s extraordinary journey to freedom. Co-sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library.
