Walk through history with farmer and Revolutionary War spy Abraham Woodhull. Explore the nature sanctuary that was once Woodhull’s farm, the Setauket Village Green, Grist Mill, Patriot’s Rock and historic grave sites. Explore the woods, fields, ponds and bays that tell the story of Long Island’s colonization and settlement. Abraham Woodhull, aka: Samuel Culper was the spy recruited by George Washington’s spy chief, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, who was born and raised in Setauket. The Culper Spy ring operated on Long Island between 1778 and 1783. Members included Setauket residents Abraham Woodhull, Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster and Anna Smith Strong. The other main spy, Robert Townsend (aka Samuel Culper Jr.) was from Oyster Bay and lived in British occupied New York City where he was a merchant. The spy ring provided much of the intelligence sent to George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
