A ten year veteran of volunteering at the Fire Island Lighthouse; Harold "Harry" Stumme recalls the changes, history, and surprises at weekly tours of this historic landmark located just across the Great South Bay. Over these ten years, he has welcomed visitors from 72 foreign countries and the list continues to grow. Interactive screens help explain how the original Fresnel Lens, now housed in the Lens Building, once worked as a beacon for sailors. The 182 step climb to the top of the tower is a weekly exercise. On a clear day, the ever changing Manhattan skyline is visible. White-tailed deer abound as well as the monarch butterflies’ migration in the fall. Special events and children's programs occur year round. Find out what makes the Fire Island Lighthouse special for visitors and natives of Long Island alike.
