Description

Architect, author and historian Gary Lawrance, co-author with Anne Surchin of “Houses of the Hamptons 1880-1930,” will discuss the history of the since destroyed beachfront property overlooking Lake Agawam on Gin Lane. Dr. T. Gaillard Thomas, often credited as the founder of Southampton’s summer colony, was the first to build on the beach. Next came Dr. Peter Wyckoff whose sprawling, 58-room Tudor style mansion underwent a complete transformation in the 1920s, when Woolworth heiress Jessie Donahue and her husband created the most lavish pleasure palace the village had ever seen, only to be disappointed in their social aspirations, snubbed for being too rich and showy. This lecture is part of the Southampton Historical Museum’s four part “Gilded Age Lecture Series,” each lecture is $10, free for members and children or $30 for all four lectures.
