The recent US Supreme Court Decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, struck a blow to American democracy and bodily autonomy by overturning the protections Roe v. Wade guaranteed for nearly 50 years. Before, during, and after the codification of abortion rights in the US, Yiddish writers from all over the world have captured a variety of circumstances and consequences surrounding the termination of pregnancy.
Join prominent feminist Yiddishishts and the Workers Circle in a Zoom meeting for stories and poems about abortion written by female Yiddish authors – including some translated to English for the first time. Workers Circle CEO, Ann Toback, will help audiences relate these historical depictions to their current plight for reproductive justice and share ways people can have their voices heard.
Stories and poems by Shira Gorshman, Blume Lempel, Kadia Molodowsky, Chava Rosenfarb, and Rosa Gutman and presented and/or translated by Eve Jochnowitz, Chana Pollack, Ellen Cassedy, Faith Jones, and Amanda Miriam-Khaye Seigel.
This program is free, but Workers Circle welcomes an $18 suggested donation that will go towards strengthening their world-renowned Yiddish program and engaging their community in social justice activism.
