Description

Darryl Strawberry, a four-time World Series winner, will be sharing about his struggle with drug abuse on Saturday, June 11th at 5:00 pm. This anti-drug event, which is free to the public and brought to you by South Bay Bible Church, will be held on the ball fields of the East Moriches Middle School.

“Drug abuse is out of hand on Long Island,” said Martin Hawley, Senior Pastor of South Bay Bible Church “Many people in our community have personally struggled with drugs or have been affected by the substance abuse of a friend or family member.”

According to SuburbanHeroin.com over 2,700 Long Islanders were arrested for heroin abuse in a two-year period, and over 240 Long Islanders died of heroin overdose in one year alone. Hawley explains, “We have seen the pain and hurt caused by drug abuse, and we want to offer our community a way out of this struggle.”

Major League baseball legend, Darryl Strawberry understands the struggle with drug addiction firsthand. “Addiction is a struggle, and you can get caught up in it," said Strawberry "It led to a life of destructive behavior; there's no question about it. My relationships with my first wife and second wife — it tore people's lives up.”

During his 17-year career, Darryl Strawberry was named the Major League Rookie of the Year and played for the New York Mets, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Yankees.

He was suspended from the Major Leagues three times due to drug abuse, which eventually brought his successful but troubled career to an abrupt end.

"Having overcome devastating addiction myself, I’ve learned to use my own experiences, struggles, and triumph to help others find their own key to recovery,” said Strawberry. He now travels and shares his story of faith and triumph to those affected by drug abuse.

“Here I am, a baseball superstar, falling into the pits, having everybody write you off, and then having God say, ‘I’m going to use your mess for a message.’ How beautiful it that?”

“People will receive hope from Darryl’s encouraging story” explains Martin Hawley “Anyone is welcome to join us for this free event, especially those who are struggling with drugs or those who know someone that is.” No reservation is needed to attend the outdoor event; however, guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. The event location is 9 Adelaide Avenue, East Moriches, NY 11940.
