Description

Eminent art historian Gregory Hedberg of New York and Southampton, a leading expert on Edgar Degas, has long maintained that a plaster cast of the artist’s “Little Dancer,” discovered in 2004, predates an extensive reworking of the sculpture by the artist and was made from his original version, which caused a sensation in 1881. The arguments for his theory, which is gaining important ground among art historians, are laid out in his recently published book, Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. He will offer an overview and explain why he believes that the “Little Dancer” helped spark the birth of modern art. The talk, in the beautiful Music Room of the 1843 Rogers Mansion, will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Co-sponsored by the Southampton Historical Museum, Southampton Books, and the Rogers Memorial Library.
