Description

Workshop Leaders: Pat Robben and Trish Brophy. Pat, a basket weaver for over 23 years, teaches workshops for children and adults. She is very active in the Basket Weavers Guild of Eastern Long Island and the Long Island Basket Guild. Trish, a Native American from the Mohawk Tribe, uses various grasses, embellishments, and weaving in the beautiful hard-shell gourd work she creates. She is also a member of both basket weavers’ guilds.

Basket making is one of the oldest crafts; in fact baskets were a necessity before we had paper or plastic bags. They were made from wood, vines, leaf, or fiber. Today we are learning to substitute handmade baskets and woven bags for paper and plastic as our concern for the environment grows. This workshop is a wonderful way to start learning how to make a simple reed basket so that we understand the basics and can go on to make more complicated baskets and weavings. Trish and Pat will provide each participant with a kit filled with the materials needed for making this small reed basket. Material fee $12
