Saving Hubble was released in celebration of the Hubble Space Telescope’s 25th anniversary in orbit. The film explores the scientific cultural, political and spiritual significance of Hubble to astronomers, engineers, astronauts, politicians, program managers and the general public.
The Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off on April 24, 1990 with the Hubble Space Telescope on board and Hubble was released into space the following day. Hubble has reshaped our perception of the cosmos and revealed properties of space and time that for most of human history were only probed in the imaginations of scientists and philosophers alike. There have been five Hubble servicing missions, the last being in May 2009. Today Hubble continues to provide views of cosmic wonders never before seen and is at the forefront of many new discoveries.
