You Gotta Believe is one of a precious few organizations in the U.S and the only organization in the New York City Metro area that limits its practice to finding permanent parents and families for young adults, teens, and pre-teens in the foster care system. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about adding to their family by adopting an older child from foster care, You Gotta Believe has an orientation to their 10 week GPS2/MAPP parent preparation program coming up on Monday, January 11, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at 34 Park Ave., Bayshore, NY.
The classes begin with a general orientation to the realities of the foster care system and an up close look at the focus and unique values of YGB. We then cover the documentation required for certification as well as the psychosocial needs of the children in care. We also delve into the immediate and long-term effects on youth of being removed from one’s family and being placed with strangers, issues surrounding youth that are institutionalized and its potential impact on the family. There are classes on discipline strategies, issues such as separation and loss and what will be expected of prospective families. Throughout our classes, you will hear from adoptive and foster families as well as young people currently living in foster care and in need of a family. We aim to provide the most experiential process as possible, so you get the “real” view of what being a permanent parent is all about.
