Description

In a one-hour talk, including Q & A, Joan Baum will explore the content and controversy surrounding this one-time staple of school readings lists, a book Ernest Hemingway declared the source of “all modern American literature” and “the best book we’ve had.” But is Huck Finn too dated or “politically incorrect?” Set in the antebellum Midwest and South, the novel was published in the wake of Reconstruction, 20 years before Thomas Dixon’s The Clansman, which gave rise to D.W. Griffith’s film Birth of a Nation. Co-Sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library.
