“How to Catch a Wave in Pastels” an in-person workshop instructed by Lana Ballot, Saturday, June 8th and Sunday June 9th, 10AM-4PM, at The Atelier at Flowerfield.

No matter how many times you’ve walked along the water’s edge, you’ll find something new and exciting because the light is never quite the same. Learn how to get that beautiful glow in the waves, how to capture their translucency, how the light affects the foam on the surface of the wave, and how it changes its colors. 

Lana Ballott has been painting the ocean for years and is a master of subtle and luminous colors in pastels. We are so fortunate that she will be sharing her expertise in this workshop.

To start, you will learn basic wave anatomy.  You’ll also learn how to handle translucency, sparkles, foam spray, wet sand and more. Special attention will be given to using color and value to create strong, dynamic compositions.

You will also look at the advantages of working directly on toned papers or using the Wet Underpainting technique.  Demos will be based on coastal landscape (coastal dunes). Students can use the demo reference photos in their projects or bring their own.

Your instructor, Lana Ballot, is a professional artist and pastel painting instructor. She has been teaching pastel painting throughout the United States and internationally. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a member of the IAPS Master Circle and a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists.  Her work has been exhibited and has won awards in national juried shows.
