On May 5 at 4:00 PM, the Hunter Opera Theater in collaboration with American Opera Projects present a preview performance of Paula Kimper’s Patience and Sarah at the historic Setauket Presbyterian Church. The opera, with a libretto by Wende Parsons based on a novel by Isabella Miller was originally premiered at Lincoln Center in 1998, and has since been revised by the composer. Hailed as “a rare and moving opera about women in love” (New York Magazine), Patience and Sarah tells the story of two young women -- the worldly and educated Patience -- and the poor farmer’s daughter, Sarah, who fall in love, and leave everything behind to start a life together. This groundbreaking work was the first major opera production that included two female lovers in the leading roles.
Please note that due to a brief scene of domestic violence (an adult character is slapped by her father), parental discretion is advised.
A pre-performance discussion with the artistic team takes place at 3 PM. A reception follows the show.
