"Rhett Miller has been playing in touring bands (most notably, The Old 97’s) for the better part of 20 years. This fact alone certainly qualifies him as someone allowed to title his latest solo album titled The Traveler, which will be released on May 12th. Although the album was written and performed by Miller he also had some help, most notably by the members of Black Prairie, a band based in Portland that plays everything from bluegrass to klezmer to country and shares members with the Decemberists. The band (Black Prairie) entered the studio with the singer (Rhett Miller) and briskly recorded the songs that make up this album (The Traveler). Additional guitar work was also added by Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of REM.
If Turnpike Troubadours are playing in your town, you’ll know it. A block or two from the venue, you’ll see the crowds lining up. Get closer and you’ll start to hear the music — rockin’ hard, lashed by burnin’ fiddle and guitar, maybe a little rough on the edges but with a deep-rooted soul that’s impossible to resist. Evan Felker, songwriter and guitarist for Turnpike Troubadours details some of his songwriting process behind the new material in our interview. He decided to write songs with a narrative bent filled with fictional characters inspired by the people he’s known throughout his life. Many are from the area around southeastern Oklahoma where he grew up, from places like the factories and mills he worked after finishing tech school. Felker co-wrote one of the new songs on the album, “Come As You Are,” with Rhett Miller of the Old 97s."
