Description

During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union stood at the brink of nuclear war three times. In 1962, the Soviet introduction of nuclear missiles into Cuba provoked an American blockade that nearly escalated into armed clash and nuclear response. In 1973, the October or "Yom Kippur War" led to threats of an American-Soviet confrontation and an American nuclear alert. Ten years later, American wargames in Europe nearly triggered a Soviet nuclear response and contributed to a global war scare. What lessons do these three crises have for us in the present? Is it possible to actually learn from history? Co-Sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library.
