Join a park ranger on a hike into the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness to the site of the former seaside community of Long Cove. Long Cove was originally a fishing community built with the salvage of shipwrecks in the 1800’s. Families of the original squatters built summer shacks in the 1900’s which remained until the area became part of Fire Island National Seashore and the only federal wilderness area in New York State. Learn about what life was like on the Great South Beach, and how change is inevitable on our dynamic island. 3-miles roundtrip. Dress for the weather and be prepared for walking on sand. Bring drinking water, snack, sun and insect protection.
